Image format converter — frequently asked questions

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is the safest choice for logos, screenshots and graphics. JPG gives the smallest files for ordinary photographs. WEBP usually beats JPG by 25–35% at the same visual quality and is supported by every modern browser. BMP is uncompressed and mainly useful for legacy Windows software.

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose in the “Background colour” dropdown — white by default. The same rule applies to BMP, which is written as 24-bit uncompressed pixels.

Yes. The tool writes a genuine 54-byte BITMAPFILEHEADER, a 40-byte BITMAPINFOHEADER and bottom-up 24-bit BGR rows padded to a 4-byte boundary, exactly as a classic uncompressed Windows bitmap.

No watermarks, no metadata stripping surprises and no quality loss beyond the setting you choose. The output pixel dimensions always match the source picture.
